Start Living the Van Life this Summer!

Traveling in luxury van style.

Van life appeals to many people for different reasons, whether it’s to travel or to save on monthly expenses. Summertime offers a great opportunity to trek somewhere in luxurious van style. However, there are some things to consider before you start. You may be itching for a good road trip now that the worldwide pandemic is winding down. But it’s important to ask yourself what you need to start living the van life first before you hit the open road. Here are a few key resources you’ll need to start living on the road.

A Dependable Van

This one is a no-brainer! First and foremost, you won’t be able to get on the road and travel without a reliable van. And you don’t want to settle for just any old van you can get your hands on. Sure, buying a used vehicle will save you money in the short term, but not for long-term use. Used vans with tens of thousands of miles on them will inevitably run into mechanical problems that you’ll have to fix down the line. It would be better to seek out lightly used options with low mileage and a good amount of comfort and space to live in. It may cost more immediately, but it will save you money in repairs later.  Alternatively, you could always rent a van for your summer road trip. This way you can pick the make model and style that best fits your needs.

Access to Amenities

Another necessity for van living is access to your basic amenities, such as electricity, water, bathrooms, and parking. People who live travel by vans usually gather electricity with a generator or solar panels. You can opt to buy cases of water or fill up your supplies at campgrounds or gas stations when you run low. Some paid campgrounds also supply electricity, which is a great opportunity to take advantage of while you’re staying there. You’ll be able to find most of your necessary amenities at these locations, so make sure to scope out campsites in your area.

Cooking Tools

You’ll either be picking up food often or cooking for yourself as part of the van life. If you plan to cook for yourself, you’ll need a reliable and safe method of cooking your food. If you’re familiar with using a smokeless grill, one of these can be a great option for van life. Some models of smokeless grills even double as bonfires to help you stay warm outdoors during the colder months of your van travel. And you’ll want to prepare a list of go-to recipes for your grill or other cooking means. Having a variety of van life–friendly recipes will help you avoid spending money on fast food.

Van life can be stressful, and it’s definitely not for everyone. But once you plan for and get access to these mentioned resources, your van living and travel will be much easier and more enjoyable. Just follow this list, and you’ll be well on your way to having what you need to start living the van life this summer.
