The 1st Annual BaconFest – Omaha, Nebraska

BaconFest - Omaha

BaconFest – Omaha

The 1st Annual BaconFest in Omaha, Nebraska will take place on Sunday, August 11th, 2013.

The Salvation Army is celebrating its 125th year of making Omaha a better place and decided to set up BaconFest as a fun way to help celebrate this milestone and raise funds for the Kroc Community Centers.  These centers were dedicated to the community by Ray and Joan Kroc, heirs of the McDonald fortune.  In conjunction with the Salvation Army, the Kroc Centers are community-based facilities that merge traditional social services with arts, education, and fitness, ultimately, encouraging members of the community to reach their highest potential.

I have been asked to serve on a panel of judges for the Farmland Bacon Cook-Off,  where nine local chefs will compete in five categories.  The judges will taste fresh samples of the creations and will select winners for each category.  PRIZE MONEY will be awarded to the winners!

The breakdown is as follows:

  • Best in Show –  $1,000
  • Best in Savory – 1st ($500) and 2nd ($250)
  • Best in Sweet –  1st ($500) and 2nd ($250)

Bacon pig cloud -cropI’ve been told that two of the nine chefs will be working with cured pork products and the others are working from uncured pork belly.

Overall, this is an all-American fun summertime event for the whole family and a great community-oriented cause.  I’m honored to be a part of it, and even more excited to eat some fantastic bacon recipes!

Oink…OINK!
